Why resume synonyms matter more than ever
ATS filters and AI screeners are pattern matchers. When every applicant opens a bullet with "Responsible for managing…", your bullet blends into a wall of identical phrases — both to a human reviewer and to the embedding model ranking your resume. A sharper verb signals the kind of work you actually did (built, negotiated, diagnosed, scaled) and gives the screener a reason to keep reading.

1. "Managed" → Led, Directed, Spearheaded, Orchestrated

2. "Created" → Built, Designed, Architected, Launched
Before: Created a new onboarding flow.
After: Architected a new onboarding flow that lifted activation 24%.
3. "Helped" → Partnered, Enabled, Coached, Equipped
Before: Helped sales close enterprise deals.
After: Partnered with sales to close 4 enterprise deals worth $1.2M ARR.
4. "Responsible for" → Owned, Drove, Delivered
Before: Responsible for monthly reporting.
After: Owned the monthly board report, cutting prep time from 3 days to 4 hours.
5. "Improved" → Optimized, Streamlined, Accelerated, Overhauled
Before: Improved checkout conversion.
After: Optimized checkout, lifting conversion from 2.1% to 3.4%.
The 3-part formula for a stronger bullet
- Pick a verb that matches the work. A people-leading bullet wants Directed; a building bullet wants Architected; an analysis bullet wants Benchmarked.
- Add scope. How many people, accounts, dollars, or systems? Numbers give the verb something to anchor to.
- End with a measurable result. Percent lift, dollar impact, time saved, risk reduced — even a directional metric beats none.
Words to cut entirely
Some words don't need a synonym — they need to disappear. Strike hard-working, motivated, results-driven, team player, synergy, and the catch-all utilized. Adjectives about effort signal weakness; the metric is the proof.
